Walking Tours
The Melbourne Greeter Service operates from the Melbourne Visitor Centre, in Federation Square. This service is available in 20 languages and connects visitors to local volunteers who offer free half-day orientation tours of the city. Book at least three days in advance (tel: (03) 9658 9658; e-mail: greeter@melbourne.vic.gov.au).
Heritage Walking Tours are self-guided tours detailed in a series of maps, which are available from the Melbourne Visitor Information Centre and tourist information booths throughout the city.
Bus Tours
There are a number of private companies offering bus tours of the city and beyond including Melbourne's Best Tours (tel: (03) 9397 4911 or 1300 130 550, in Australia only; website: www.melbournetours.com.au), which visits the city's major attractions and provides commentary. This tour takes around four hours.
Boat Tours
A relaxing way for visitors to see the city is to take a cruise along the Yarra River. Melbourne River Cruises (tel: (03) 8610 2600; website: www.melbcruises.com.au) depart every half hour, daily from Southgate (opposite Flinders Street Station). There are three different tours, each taking one to two-and-a-half hours. Tickets are available at the Melbourne River Cruises Kiosk (Berth 5) at Southgate.
