Cambridge City Guide - Getting Around

Public Transport

Most of the city's main sites are within easy walking distance from the centre, so many visitors to Cambridge decide to explore the city exclusively as pedestrians. This is part of the reason why the Park & Ride car parks outside of town are much used. Still, the public transport system is very good. Stagecoach (tel: 0870 608 2608; website: www.stagecoachbus.com) operates a network of frequent and reliable buses that provide excellent access to all parts of Cambridge. Several types of ticket are available, including the City Megarider, which provides unlimited travel on Citi buses for seven days. In addition, a free city centre shuttle bus service runs every 15 minutes (Mon-Sat 0900-1800).

Taxis

There are several taxi ranks throughout the city, including at the train and bus stations. Taxis can also be hailed anywhere on the street. To pre-book a taxi try Andy Cabs (tel: (01223) 571 144), Atlas Taxis (tel: 0845 260 6002), Camtax Taxis (tel: (01223) 242 424), Cachet Cars (tel: 0845 602 4641) or United Taxis (tel: (01223) 313 131).

There are numerous car hire companies operating in Cambridge. Alamo Car Rental (tel: (01223) 365 438), Avis Rent a Car (tel: (01223) 212 551), Cambridge Car and Van Rental (tel: (01223) 464 045), Enterprise (tel: (01223) 234 400), Europcar (tel: (01223) 233 644), Hertz (tel: (01223) 309 842), National (tel: (01223) 365 438) and Thrifty (tel: (01223) 321 321) all have offices in the city.

Bicycle Hire

Cambridge is one of the best cycling cities in Britain, with over 130km (80 miles) of cycle lanes and routes. There are plenty of cycle hire shops, many of which are located in the heart of the city: Cambridge Station Cycles (tel: (01223) 307 125), City Cycle Hire (tel: (01223) 365 629), H Drake (tel: (01223) 363 468) and Mikes Bikes (tel: (01223) 312 591).

They are located at the Park Street car park (tel: (01223) 457452) and the Grafton Centre East car park (tel: (01223) 461858).
