Gothenburg City Guide - Nightlife

Bars: The area around the main boulevard, Avenyn (full name: Kungsportsavenyn), has the greatest concentration of mainstream clubs, bars and pubs in Gothenburg. A slightly more alternative atmosphere characterises the bars and pubs in the Haga old town and also in the Linné district. Bitter Bar & Matsal, Linnégatan 59, offers both food and drink and is a nice meeting place with an exceptionally long bar. Klara, Viktoriagatan 1, is a nice, chilled-out place that attracts students as well as the city's cultural types. More exclusive is Fusion, Storgatan 1, which has a nice mix of drinks and jazz on the menu. Bliss Resto, Magasinsgatan 3, is trendy, but in a relaxed, nice way. There is a bar and a small restaurant. Those looking for a good pub should head for The Dubliner, ÖstraHamngatan 50B, which is an Irish pub with a friendly atmosphere.

Clubs: There is no shortage of night clubs and discos in Gothenburg. Perhaps the most famous is Nefertiti, Hvidtfeldtsplatsen 6 (website: www.nefertiti.se), with its excellent repertoire of blues, jazz and world music. Trädgår'n, Nya Allén (website: www.tradgarn.se), is a classic Gothenburg nightclub that often hosts well-known live acts. It also has an excellent restaurant. Valand, at the junction of Avenyn and Vasagatan (website: www.valand.nu), is another local classic. It has a stronger disco feel and offers several dance floors and bars. So does Nivå, Avenyn 9, which also has a terrace with rooftop grill in the summer.

Live Music: Nefertiti, Hvidtfeldtsplatsen 6 (website: www.nefertiti.se) is the classic jazz venue in Gothenburg. Linnéterrassen, Linnégatan 32 (website: www.linneterrassen.gastrogate.com) is a popular bar and restaurant with its own jazz band. Sticky Fingers, Kaserntorget 7 (website: www.stickyfingers.nu) is a venue with a varied programme of music - from heavy metal in the basement via indie and pop to soul and funk on the floors above. Storan, Kungsparken 1 (website: http://storan.sami.se) is a charming concert venue with a long history. Both international and Swedish stars perform here. Scandinavium, Valhallagatan 1 (website:www.scandinavium.se), is an indoor arena for big concerts and shows, while Ullevi, Ullevi (website: www.gotevent.se), one of Sweden's largest outdoor venues with a capacity of 60,000 people, hosts the really big events - rock artists like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan have performed here.
