$$ (US$50 to US$150)
$$$ (US$150 to US$250)
$$$$ (over U$300)

Dan Panorama
Jerusalem Located in West Jerusalem just half a mile from the Old City, the Dan Panorama Hotel offers tastefully decorated rooms with modern bathrooms and all the facilities you'd expect from a five star hotel. The rooftop pool offers spectacular views across the old City and the Judean Hills.

Luxury

King David
Jerusalem's most famous hotel and the flagship of the Dan Hotel group, this is the ultimate in luxury with a price tag to match. Built in the 1930s, the hotel enjoys spectacular views over the old city and is a historic building in its own right - it was used by the British Army as its headquarters during the period of the British mandate and was bombed in 1946 by the Jewish Underground movement. It comes with all the facilities you would expect of a luxury hotel including a pool, spa and business facilities.

23 King David Street

Price: $$$$

American Colony Hotel
Located in East Jerusalem, this European-run hotel is popular with journalists, aid workers, diplomats and archaeologists. It is one of the most beautiful hotels in Jerusalem. Located in the former palace of a 19th century Turkish pasha (who built a wing for each of his four wives), it opened as a hotel in 1881 and is the oldest in Jerusalem. Its luxurious rooms reflect a bygone era: the grounds are dotted with fairytale-like spots to relax - a lush garden with flowers and butterflies and a tiled courtyard with fountains. Only a few minutes walk from the Damascus Gate, it is within walking distance of the Old City.

1 Louis Vincent Street, off Nablus Road
Tel: 02) 627 9777.

Moderate

Tulip Inn Jerusalem Golden Walls
This is a conveniently located hotel - just outside the city walls and a short walk from most of the main sites. Rooms are modern and comfortable with cable television. The western side of the hotel tends to be noisy as it overlook the East Jerusalem bust station, while rooms at the front have a view over the Old city. The hotel has a bar and restaurant and offers good value for money in a central location.

Sultan Suleiman Street
Tel: (02) 627 2416.
Price: $$

The Olive Tree Hotel
Opened in the year 2000, Jerusalem's first themed hotel might not be to everyone's taste, but if it's kitsch Arabesque you're looking for, then this is the place. However, this is limited to the public areas and the rooms themselves are more subdued and functional. The hotel is in easy walking distance of East Jerusalem and the Old City but it's a longer walk or taxi ride to West Jerusalem. However, the health club complete with pool and sauna make it an attractive option.

23 St George Street, East Jerusalem
Tel: (02) 541 0410.

Other Recommendations

The King Solomon Hotel
The stunning views (the hotel pool overlooks the Judean hills and from the roof you can see the Dead Sea) make up for the slightly outdated décor in this five star hotel located in the centre of Jerusalem. The hotel caters to religious Jewish travellers by offering a Glatt kosher menu and Shabbat lights in the bedrooms. The centrepiece of the lobby is a globe-shaped metal sculpture of Jerusalem, created by the English-born artist Frank Meisler. The hotel is just 10 minutes' walk from the Jaffa Gate of the Old City and the Montefiore Windmill and Yemin Moshe are close by.

32 King David Street

New Imperial
With an air of faded grandeur, the New Imperial offers a charming place to stay for those on a budget but who still want a central location. The sweeping staircase in the lobby sets the tone - all the rooms have high-ceilings and en suite facilities. Some of the rooms have balconies overlooking the streets of the Christian quarter - entertaining enough to make up for the lack of a television. The hotel has an Internet café, bar and coffee shop.

Christian Quarter, Jaffa Gate, Old City
Tel: (02) 627 2000.
