The brewer's assistant, Cord Broyhan, invents a light beer, which stimulates the city's economic prosperity

Hanover is awarded a Schützenhof, which provides the basis for the present-day Schützenfest (Marksmen's Fair)

Hanover becomes a Protestant city

Hanover is occupied by Danish troops as part of the Thirty Years' War; a third of the population die of the plague

Great Garden at Herrenhausen is laid out

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz becomes counsellor and librarian to the ducal court
