Belgrade City Guide - Resorts & Excursions

Visitors staying longer than a few days may want to explore beyond Belgrade itself. The region offers no end of options ranging from kayaking and winery tours to skiing and ice climbing. Mount Avala lies only 18km (11 miles) south of Belgrade and is a popular day trip for hikers. It's also home to the Unknown Soldier Monument which sits atop the 511m (1,677ft) peak and was erected in memory of the soldiers who died during WWI. About 85km (53 miles) north of Belgrade is Novi Sad (which itself is worth several days), Serbia's second city, from where visitors can explore the stunning Fruska Gora National Park (website: www.npfruskagora.co.yu). The park is also home to 16 Serbian Orthodox church monasteries which are famous for their architecture, treasuries, libraries and incredible frescoes.
