The Dar al-Assad Opera House, near Midan Umawiyeen, on Sharia Shoukri al-Quwatly, holds concerts, theatrical performances and exhibitions arranged by the Ministry of Culture. The British Council, on Sharia Maysaloun Street (tel: (011) 331 0631; website: www.britishcouncil.org/syria), organises many cultural events, as do the Goethe Institute, 8, Sharia Adnan Malki (tel: (011) 371 9435; website: www.goethe.de/damaskus), and the French Cultural Centre, opposite the Alaa Towers Hotel in a side street off Sharia Yussef al-Azmeh (tel: (011) 231 6181; website: www.ccf-damas.org). The best cinema is the Cham Cinema attached to the Cham Hotel, which shows Hollywood blockbusters in English.
