Basel City Guide - Shopping

Shopping opportunities are excellent and abundant both within the city and in the region surrounding Basel. One of the key advantages of shopping in the border region is the price difference on various types of goods between Switzerland, France and Germany. Each country has its own price advantages, which can be explored by serious shoppers.
But it is hardly necessary to move outside of the city centre to satisfy the acquisitive urges. A vast number of shops can be found in the town centre and the Old Town, and in addition comes the area around Claraplatz in Kleinbasel and the St Jakob Park shopping centre by the football stadium.

The main shopping street (and also the longest) is Freie Strasse, where a great number of upmarket designer and fashion brands are represented. Some of them can be found in the famous fashion store Trois Pommes, which has separate stores for men (Freie Strasse 93) and women (Freie Strasse 74). For more arty and alternative, but still fashionable goods, the area around Schneidergasse and Spalenberg is worth exploring.

Shops are usually open 0900-1900 from Monday to Wednesday, 0900-2100 on Thursday, 0900-2000 on Friday and 0900-1700 on Saturday. Many shops are closed on Sunday, but some keep open 1000-1700.
