Nice has long been associated with the arts, from the days when Europe's great painters flocked here to capture its famous light and nefarious ambience. Happily, beyond its brash exterior Nice is still something of a cultural centre today. On the Promenade des Arts is the famous Théatre de Nice (tel: (04) 9313 9090; website: www.tnn.fr), which first opened in the 1960s, and still serves up a regular diet of classical concerts. Other theatres of note include the Théatre Francis Gag on 4 rue St Joseph (tel: (04) 9200 7850; website: www.theatre-francis-gag.org), and the Théatre Lino Ventura at 168 boulevard de l'Ariane (tel: (04) 9327 3737; website: www.tlv-nice.org). Another excellent cultural institution is the Opéra de Nice, 4-6 rue St-Francois-de-Paule (tel: (04) 9217 4000: website: www.opera-nice.org), which from October to June offers concerts, ballets, recitals and opera performances.
