Volubilis: One of the most rewarding day trip excursions from Fes is to the remarkable ancient Roman ruins and mosaics, 70km (43 miles) away. There are organised coach tours from Fes (details from the tourist information office), but independent travellers may prefer to take the train from Fes to Meknes and thence a taxi via the historic town of Moulay to Volubilis. It will cost at least a third of the price of a coach tour.
Meknes: The capital of Morocco in the 17th century, it is well worth a visit to see its many monuments and a medina which is less pressurised yet still has good shopping.
Ifrane: With lakes, parks, red-roofed houses, this surprising Alpine-style resort in the Middle Atlas 60km (37 miles) south of Fes is easily reachable by bus or grands taxis; the surrounding countryside is pleasant for walks or picnics.
