San Jose City Guide - Shopping

Tours in San Jose

If you're ready to dive into the madness of a Latin American market, the best place in the city to shop is the Mercado Central at the western end of the pedestrian walkway in the downtown area. Whether you're shopping for a kilo of coffee beans or a Costa Rican football jersey, chances are you'll find what you're looking for here.

Although it's decidedly more touristy, the Mercado Artesanal in the Plaza de la Democracia is a daily artisan's market that is perfect for souvenir shoppers. Here, you'll find dozens of stalls selling tourist goods ranging from original artwork to the standard assortment of Costa Rica-themed T-shirts.

Galería Namu in downtown San José is regarded as one of the finest shops in the capital. This is the best spot to buy authentic indigenous crafts as well as contemporary Costa Rican artwork.

Shopping hours are generally Monday to Saturday 0930-2000, though it's normal for proprietors to take a one- to two-hour lunch break.
