Qatari tour operator Gulf Adventures (tel: 431 5555; website: www.gulf-adventures.com) runs an afternoon and evening tour in a comfortable 4-wheel drive vehicle, taking you some 75km (50 miles) through the Qatari desert, much of it off-road, including over 150m (492ft) high sand dunes. The highlight is the Khor Al-Adaid inland sea. There is also the opportunity to try sand boarding down the dunes before a traditional Bedouin-style barbecue amongst the shifting sands at a tented camp. The company also runs shorter Dunes Discovery tours. Air-conditioned 4-wheel drives are used to really get out amongst the wild desert scenery. The tours leave the city after a short stop at the Sealine Beach Resort, where tyres are readied for the action ahead. Then it is on to the dunes for ‘dune bashing', perhaps the most popular activity for tourists visiting Qatar.
