Getting Around
Stuttgart
Public Transport
Stuttgart has an excellent modern public transport network, comprising buses and local trains (Stadtbahnen, designated by the letter U). These are operated under the aegis of Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund Stuttgart (VVS) (tel: (711) 66060; website: www.vvs.de). There are around 200km (120 miles) of Stadtbahn lines criss-crossing the city over up to 15 routes, some of which operate only at busy times to the Daimler Stadium and the congress centre, and a number of which converge on the central railway station. There is a comprehensive network of buses serving all areas, the main bus terminal being located next to the central railway station.
A range of tickets and passes is available for the visitor, ranging from a one day pass giving unlimited rides for a 24-hour period, either in the city itself or across the entire VVS administered regional network, and day tickets for groups of up to five people, to three day cards for visitors staying in accommodation or attending conferences anywhere in the VVS region. Other passes, such as the Stuttcard Plus, also give discounts on admission to visitor attractions. All students benefit from discounted travel on the network. Public transport generally operates between approximately 0500-0000.
An unusual form of transport is the rack and pinion railway, locally known as the ‘Zacke', which plies a steep 2.2km (1.4 mile) route between Marienplatz in the city centre and Degerloch, on a hill overlooking Stuttgart.

Taxi Auto Zentrale (tel: (711) 19410; website: www.taxi-auto-zentrale.de) operates a fleet of 700 taxis, which can be booked by telephone on 566 061. Taxi Center Stuttgart (tel: (711) 551 0000; website: www.stgt.com/Stuttgart/trans_taxi_eng.htm) is another source.
