The A1 autocesta (motorway) from Split to Zagreb provides a fast, direct route from the capital. A toll is payable. Work on an extension of the A1 to Dubrovnik is underway. The final completion date is subject to change, but is currently expected to be sometime in 2010. The Jadranska magistrala (E65 coastal road) runs south to Dubrovnik and north to Rijeka. This snaking road is undeniably scenic, but is exceptionally busy in summer with convoys of holiday traffic.

The main bus station is located five minutes' walk from the old town at Obala Kneza Domagoja 12 (tel: 060 327 777 for domestic services or (021) 329 199 for international services; website: www.ak-split.hr). Countless private companies operate coaches to and from other parts of the country. Domestic services include frequent coaches to Zagreb, and lines up and down the coast to Rijeka and Dubrovnik. Operators include Croatia Bus (tel: 091 4262 731; website: www.croatiabus.hr). There are also daily coaches to Bosnia & Herzegovina, Slovenia, Italy and Germany. In addition, Eurolines (tel: 0870 580 8080, in the UK only; website: www.eurolines.com) operate a weekly coach service from London Victoria to Split, passing through Brussels and Frankfurt en route.
